Ironwood Hotel is considered as living symbol of history, takes its name from the ironwood tree, renowned for its strength and durability. In the Philippines, this tree is called “mangkono,” and its lumber is considered the strongest in the country. The previous building’s structure, estimated to be at least a century old, was built using this material, a testament to its enduring power.

The hotel’s resilience was put to the test in November 2013, when Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), the strongest cyclone ever recorded at the time of landfall, devastated Tacloban city. The hotel’s foundation, constructed with ironwood, remained intact amid the destruction, demonstrating the material’s sturdiness. Despite the city’s bleak situation, Ironwood Hotel Management believed in the city’s future and that the building was still salvageable. They saw the potential of turning it into a hotel, inspired by the ironwood’s vigor and durability. Today, Ironwood Hotel stands tall as a testament to the city’s resilience and the people of Tacloban’s determination to rise from the ruins.

The hotel’s interior showcases the beauty of the ironwood, as seen in the chandeliers and reception desk. Designer Bernardo Urbina conceptualized this as part of his “Tacloban Prevails” project, which aimed to revive the Tacloban community. As we face the effects of global warming, Ironwood Hotel shares this vision of upcycling, which not only gives new life to previous heritage but also reflects the hotel’s strong foundation and passion for serving guests.
